Choosing where to shop or what to eat for dinner doesn’t always seem like an important decision; certainly not one that could affect people in our communities or on the other side of the world. But the choices we make, no matter how insignificant they may seem, have an impact on the people around us. God calls us to honor Him and love other people through everything we do, and our mission on this trip is to find out a little more about what that means.

Our team will be spending a week serving at the South Bronx Food Cooperative in New York City. The mission of the co-op is to provide affordable and nutritious food to all the residents of the South Bronx (and NYC) while empowering the local community by encouraging good health, providing relevant job skills, and fostering environmentally responsible activities through democratic cooperation.

The co-op opened its storefront in the South Bronx in January, so we’ll be helping with a lot of construction, building and organization while we’re there. We’ll also be helping them with community programs and day-to-day operation. But more than anything, we’ll be asking lots of questions about food and its impact on people, culture and the world.
